New Drop-in Clinics at Milpitas City Hall help tenants and landlords make sense of new laws
Project Sentinel and the City of Milpitas are now offering a Drop-in Clinic for Tenants and Landlords on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at Milpitas City Hall, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. The Clinics will provide individual counseling on any rental housing topics, including rent increases, evictions, repairs, security deposits, roommate problems, emergency rent assistance, mobile home issues, housing discrimination, and affordable housing. Counseling sessions are confidential.
On October 15, 2019, the City Council took three steps to protect renters in Milpitas: a program for reviewing rent increases; just cause eviction protections; and a pilot rent relief program. Also affecting Milpitas tenants and landlords is the recently enacted Tenant Protection Act of 2019 (AB-1482), which may limit rent increases and apply just cause eviction provisions throughout the state. At the Drop-in Clinics, Milpitas renters and landlords will get help to understand these new laws while discussing their individual situations in a private counseling session. Project Sentinel also offers dispute resolution services including mediation.
The Drop-in Clinics are hosted by the City of Milpitas and facilitated by Project Sentinel case managers. “The City of Milpitas as a whole benefits from Project Sentinel's array of services. For communities to survive and thrive, they need to ensure that all portions of its population have access to reasonable business-housing practices. Tenants and landlords benefit by having information and resources, provided in a fair and unbiased manner. ” Says a city representative who has been collaborating with Project Sentinel on delivering this program to Milpitas residents.
An appointment is not needed, and you may call (408) 946-6582 if you have any questions. All services are free, confidential, and neutral.
